Match Summary:
Three goals, two missed penalties were the hallmarks of a rather spectacular game with fluctuating fortunes. Group favourites Nigeria were given no time at all to get into the match as their defence could never control Paraguay's Santa Cruz. The tall centre forward first hit the post with Fernandez scoring the first goal, then another splendid run resulted in a free-kick and the 2-0. When Nigeria's captain Afolabi missed a penalty, the hosts seemed to lose composure but Shittu pulled one goal back before the break. The inefficient Nigerians largely dominated the second half but Paraguay held on for the three points.

Facts & Figures
2     Paraguay qualified for the 2nd time to the 2nd round in 5 participations to the WYC final phase. In 1979, the Paraguayans won Group C with the same record as this edition (2 wins and 1 defeat) before losing to USSR in quarter finals in penalty shoot-outs. Paraguay have scored 16 points in as many matches played in WYC finals, with a record of 6 wins, 4 draws and 6 defeats (27 goals scored, 23 conceded).

2     Only twice in the history of WYC has the home team finished the tournament without losing a match. In 1991 Portugal won 5 matches in a row before drawing the final against Brazil: then the home team became World Champion after penalty shoot-outs. In 1985, the Soviet Union finished 4th due to two defeats after penalty shoot-outs against Spain (semifinals) and Nigeria (3rd-4th place play-off).
